ENCOURAGEMENT BASKETS

I have been blessed with a request from Tom to put my computer in hand and place another writing on his blog site (aTimeinLife.wordpress.com). I thought about it and came up, with the Lord’s help, this totally true and believable story that took place years ago and still is a number 1 project in my life.

On August 5th, 2004, 17 years ago, almost to the day, my best friend was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. A group of us were upset by this news and began searching for ways to pull together to see where she needed help the most. One day as I was thinking about her plight, I was praying for an idea to present to her that she would enjoy and be pleased with and that would take her mind off the shocking diagnosis. I asked the Lord for a unique and different idea to present to her during this difficult time of her life.

During these days, those closest to her, supplied our friend with time, food, laughter, rides, etc. As I was sharing this information with my cousin one day, she brought a project to my attention. She and a friend of hers had started doing Encouragement Baskets for those individuals who were trying to wrap their minds around news they had received from their medical professional about an illness, a family member, or they, themselves, were facing. During this time my cousin and her friend came up with the idea of Encouragement Baskets to distribute to those people being given news of an illness or a disturbing situation.

An Encouragement Basket is described as the following: Items purchased, wrapped, a Bible verse pertaining to the item written and taped to the outside of the item. Each wrapped present, regardless of price, will represent the Bible verse written on its outside.

As I was getting my first basket, for my friend, ready, I wrote a poem to attach to the top of the basket of presents that explains the idea behind the wrapped items:

An “Encouragement Basket” for you today,

Just a few words to help, along the way.

You have 2 choices from which to choose,

Whichever you take, you can’t possibly lose.

Number 1, you can open all these at one time.

Number 2, wait until you’re down and need an

Uphill climb!

It’s up to you, as to what you do

Just remember they will cheer, when you are blue!

They are from the heart and some from my hand,

I’m letting you know you’re the best in the land.

There’s love and respect concealed in this array,

Hoping they bring encouragement to you each day!!

In short, the person who has received the basket can open every gift included at one time or one a day, or one when they are feeling down and need a lift. It’s their choice.

An Encouragement Basket could contain 25 – 30 presents to be opened for one month. WOW, you say, 30 presents?? But, here’s the good fact about the present: The Price!! Here are some examples:

1. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew thy praise. (Psalm 51:15 KJV)

Wrapped package: Lip Gloss

2. For thou will light my candle: the Lord my God will enlightened my darkness. (Psalm 18:28 KJV)

Wrapped package: A candle or flashlight

3. But, his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. (Genesis 19:26 KJV)

Wrapped package: A salt shaker

4. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. (John 19:25 KJV)

Wrapped package: A wooden or porcelain cross

Each present for each verse is left up to the researcher’s imagination.

Each gift is not purchased with an extra high price tag, but, one that is easy on the purchaser’s pocket book! I have made the $1.00 stores the place I shop the most. I have started to stockpile lots of gifts to be able to wrap and place a Bible verse on if I am in a hurry to get a basket done!

After all scriptures are placed on the correct, individual gift package, all gifts are placed in a basket to be delivered to the recipient. If there are too many gifts for one basket, place the balance of the gifts in a second basket!

You will be surprised how these baskets have such an effect on people who are depressed, have been diagnosed with a disease, or had a family member being diagnosed. The uplifting feeling from opening these presents brings a new atmosphere to the lives of the friend or loved one.

The awareness as the basket maker is wonderful as you are putting this basket together, but, 10 times better as you watch your friend become overwhelmed by the love placed into the piece of work done for them.

If you know someone who has just been given some altering news, get busy and begin the structure of An Encouragement Basket. You will not regret one ounce of the time spent putting it together!

Just ask my friend, 17 years later, how she felt when she received hers. She has not forgotten the basket or the items included. I thank the Lord she helped me with the last one we just did!!!

Good Luck on your project!!!!!

A LEARNED TESTIMONY

I am delighted to have the opportunity to share this guest post with each of you. It is a devotional written from the heart of my good friend, Nancy Frazier. I pray it inspires each of you to treat others as she does. Enjoy Nancy’s message and be blessed.

A LEARNED TESTIMONY

BY

NANCY FRAZIER

“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.” Psalm 19:7-9

Seven years ago, a group of sixteen people began to meet once or twice a week to pray and discuss the possibility of planting a church in Asheboro or the surrounding area. After many days and nights in prayer, Journey Church was established. Having been one of those people, I was overjoyed and so pleased that the Lord chose me to help in the beginning of this beautiful church. As I began to work with the others to build a place of worship and peace, it suddenly became evident to me that I did not have, what I thought, was an adequate testimony that would connect to others and turn them towards Christ.

During this time of prayer and decision making, the Lord gave me an illustration on how to conduct myself to let others see Christ in me. Even though I am “on up in age,” I was given the task of using my Savior’s love as an example to others. The Lord actually gave me two ideas to work on and I have enjoyed both immensely!

My two life changing purposes revolve around students from my past teaching career that need encouragement and validation. Another aspect of this life-change I have participated in has just been to care for those in need. I have enjoyed this endeavor more than I would have imagined and the Lord guides me in every direction.

I am not writing to brag about what I am accomplishing or sharing with others. I am writing this devotional to let you know the Lord will deliver to you the strength and desire needed for the illustrations He offers you to share with others. My testimony resonates with the Zack Williams song “Less Like Me”. “Somebody with a hurt I could have helped, Somebody with a hand I could have held,’ are lyrics that I take into my heart and act on them, which makes my life so much more satisfied. Knowing that I am helping someone in a specific way brings joy to me and I hope to my Lord.

As the months and years have elapsed since my witness for Christ began, many changes have come over me and many new friends have been added to my life. I have thanked God on many occasions for answering my requests in such a glorious manner. I always thought a confirmation of my love for my Lord would be to influence others to join me in exhibiting those feelings but I was wrong – my God-given duties have surrounded me with gratification and happiness beyond any expectation. My rewards have been tenfold and beyond the fulfillment I anticipated. The Lord has blessed me more than I have affected those to whom I was testifying. My life has gone 110% in a direction that was unexpected. I cannot begin to explain the feelings I have gained from following what God supplied me.

If you are like I was and felt a mission to use your free time in a meaningful gesture, ask our Savior to lead you in that direction. You will be overwhelmed at His answer.

Dear Heavenly Father, help me to encourage those reading this devotional to be challenged to eliminate two items from the bottom of their to-do list and use that time to extend extra kindness to those people Jesus puts in their pathway. Help all of us who love and worship you find others who need encouragement and supply it to them as a testimony of our extended faith and love of our Heavenly Father. Amen.

I am so grateful my friend, Nancy, allowed me to share her devotional on my aTimeinlife blog site. I pray that her personal message of love, faith, and purpose touched your heart in such a way that it inspires you to do just as she has done—using her God-given talents to touch the lives of others in a positive way. I pray we all try to be a blessing unto others as we journey through life. Thank you for your heartfelt testimony, Nancy. Looking forward to sharing more of your thoughts in the future.

Five-Stars Isn’t Enough!

I am no different from most authors. I appreciate readers taking their valuable time to post their honest reviews about my books. This 5-star review on Amazon from author Denise Rezsonya touched my heart. I am feeling truly blessed by her kind comments.

Tiger Review By Denise1

If Tigers Were Angels – With God, All Things Are Possible

A review by Denise Rezsonya:

Five Stars Isn’t Enough!

I just finished reading this book and couldn’t get to my computer fast enough to write my review. I LOVED IT. If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would. If you love inspirational Christian fiction, like I do, you MUST READ THIS book. I was hooked immediately on the first page and couldn’t put it down this weekend until I finished it. I love being moved and inspired, and this book achieves both. It provides us with hope in this world of darkness. It helps us understand ways that God tries to communicate with us and why we must encounter suffering. This story addresses how our plan may not be the one God has called us to, but how His plan is so much greater for us than we could ever have imagined. Throughout the book, the main character’s faith is tested and yet it is always strengthened. The author wrote this story with such conviction and integrity, I could truly feel God’s message oozing from every page deep into my soul. Get this book – I know you will love it!
